Moment: The perfect date

Jake, a bit blurry because he moved, during our dinner date to celebrate my new job.

It was 8:30 at night and we were sitting on a bench outside of a little hole in the wall that sells cookie ice cream sandwiches.

We ended up at Scoop in Kalihi after I uncharacteristically declined key lime pie after our dinner at Kincaid’s in lieu of the allure of an ice cream sandwich cradled between two warm cookies. Or maybe even two macaroons.

I had two dollars and he had two dollars — that was just enough to get one from the little shop in Kalihi. And we had about 20 minutes to get there. Need I say it? Challenge accepted.

With the aide of Google maps, we made it five minutes before they closed and were thrilled to see the OPEN sign still lit.

I handed over the $3.75 and what we got back was a huge scoop of kona coffee ice cream wedged between two chocolate chip cookies. We walked outside and sat on a little bench in front of the shop on the sidewalk, the only light coming from the streetlights and the headlights from cars traveling along the busy street once the OPEN sign was off.

There we were. Sharing some cookies and ice cream on a bench in some random neighborhood and I couldn’t have been happier. Him in his collared shirt, and me in one of my favorite dresses and a pair of heels.

We must have looked out of place — but passing up key lime pie has never felt more right. (And I love key lime pie.)
