Daily: Kailua town for Labor Day

Aside from Ko’olina (which is the best), I’d have to say Lanikai is one of my favorite beaches on Oahu. It’s on the windward side of the island near Kailua Beach — tucked away just around the corner in a cute suburban neighborhood.

I can’t think of anything better I’d rather do on a holiday than go to the beach. There’s something about the water in Lanikai that sparkles among the soft, powdery sand. Everything just seems brighter there.

Plus, Kailua is an adorable little beach town, home to things like The Bike Shop, and even a new breed of e-bikes. A town you can bicycle safely in, and where it’s even encouraged, is so quaint in the most positive way possible. It’s a little country, and even a city girl like me likes to visit once in a while.

You can usually find Jake and I at FatBoy’s in Kailua town after we’ve Β gone to the beach or on a hike in the area. We haven’t been there in a while, so we were surprised to find these snazzy new menus hanging at the front of the store. They used to have it up on a chalkboard in the back and it gave the place a local feel that I think the new signage doesn’t.

Regardless, Jake is the king of garlic chicken and he says theirs is second to only one other local Kalihi eatery -- and that's pretty damn good. So I suggest you try it if you're into that.

Whether you’re a local or just visiting, this place has all the staples you’ll want to try in Hawaii — and for a very good price, too. I got my grilled cheese and ham sandwich with a side of fries and a drink for about $6.

There isn’t any seating inside, but there are chairs and umbrellas right outside where you can enjoy your post-beach feast comfortably.

My grilled cheese and ham sandwich with a side of fries. Typical drive-in food. Jake always asks why I buy it because I could make it at home, but I can't make it like they do -- buttery and delicious.

There’s also a variety of shops around Kailua town that you should check out — a lot of them sell things that have to do with ocean activities and sports. Bikini shops, surf shops, even places where you can rent segways, bikes, and even canoes, paddle boards and surf boards. On special occasions or holidays like today they even have sidewalk sales.

It’s a little town for sure, but it’s fun to explore and walk around in. Definitely a place worth visiting!

How did you spend your Labor Day? However you did, I hope it was a calm and relaxing day. Let me know in the comments below!
