Top 3 Summer 2013 Picks: Kona Brewing Company

Look! There are islands at the bottom!

…you’ve had one too many, the Hawaiian Islands are not at the bottom of these glasses.

My friend Emily was in fact not drunk and delusional when she said this during our Sunday night out on the town at the Kona Brewing Company in Hawaii Kai. The outline of the Hawaiian Islands was actually engraved lightly at the bottom of each beer glass.

Kona Brewing Company has become my favorite go-to place for drinks on the east side of Oahu.

Jake and I have been there a bunch of times recently — we always find a reason to go whenever we’re on that side of the island. That’s why it’s one of my Top 3 Summer 2013 Picks.

Emily and I found out the hard way that there isn’t happy hour on Sundays. Their happy hour is actually Monday – Friday, 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.

I was fine with that because it gave me an excuse to order the Ali'i Pizza, a pepperoni + pepperincini wonderland. The menu has a lot of different options -- from burgers to pastas and pizzas -- and beers, of course.

Jake turned me on to the Koko Brown -- a dark beer, because I've found that I do actually like that variety. So says the cocktail girl. I've also really come to like the Hula Hefeweizen -- which isn't a dark beer, but it does have a hint of banana, and it's really good.

If you go during happy hour, all beer is fair game. Sorry cocktail lovers, there’s nothing for you here. Their mojitos are divine, however are $8 a pop. They also have $3 appetizer specials which are all bread-based, but Jake and I like to order all three specials to share as our meal and we end up completely stuffed by the end. I recommend this.

The view is absolutely gorgeous. It’s really airy, and you’re right next to the marina with all the boats. I’d live here if I could.

As the name implies, the original location is in Kona on the Big Island. Jake is from Hilo, and he’s been to there. Hopefully one day we can go together!

Stay tuned for the rest of the countdown of my Top 3 Summer 2013 Picks! I’ll be posting periodically until the first day of Autumn.
