Review: Personalized Cakes from Liliha Bakery

Throwing a surprise birthday party for my mom!

We recently planned a surprise party for my mom’s birthday in April. Jake and I quickly (and secretively) made our way over to my parents’ condo after work to decorate while my dad kept her busy…

After screaming when seeing us crouched in her kitchen — hiding and ready to surprise her — she later described the scene as “finding two big cockroaches.”

We laid out an Italian feast for dinner — plus this beautiful cake from Liliha Bakery. Whenever I need to get a cake for some special occasion, I always give them a call.

Out of all of the personalized cakes I’ve ever gotten from Liliha Bakery — the roses on my mom’s cake this year are the tallest they’ve ever been. When you order roses on a cake, they give you roses. Big, beautiful mountains of frosting.

Liliha Bakery is — obviously — first and foremost a bakery. It’s a pretty famous spot on Oahu. You can go there to pick up some pastries, cakes, pies, or even stop by to eat at the diner for breakfast, lunch, dinner — or a late night snack.

How late night? They’re open 24 hours a day. Except Sundays. They close at 6 p.m. since they’re closed on Mondays.

Liliha Bakery is famous for their coco puffs. What are these delicious sweets? Well they’re cream-filled pastries topped with chantilly. There are chocolate and green tea coco puffs. I’m personally a true believer in the original chocolate variety.

Now what you should know is that while you can always grab a box of coco puffs, what you should do is get a customized coco puff cake. Jake got me one for my birthday (slash our anniversary, which is one day before). It may not be the most colorful birthday cake, but it may just be the most delicious.

The concept is like a cupcake cake — the chantilly connects all the coco puffs to make it cake-like. All the deliciousness of a cake plus the added deliciousness of a coco puff, and you don’t even need a knife to cut it.

But if you’re looking for something less fancy — you can always just get a personalized message. My brother is all about their famous fudge cakes. So much chocolatey goodness, you will die happy.

A round cake like this costs less than $20, maybe around $15 – $17 depending on the amount of decoration you ask for. It’s a great size for small parties — everyone gets a piece or two and there’s still a couple pieces leftover for breakfast.

On the totally opposite end of the spectrum, they also do photo cakes — like the ones where you bring in a picture and they’ll put it on a cake. I have yet to try that, but it is an option.

You can even fax them a design you want on a cake. Once I was planning a going away party for my friend Cece, who was off to Korea for an amazing opportunity, so I sent them the characters that google translate told me meant “Good luck” in Korean!

To put your own order in, all you have to do is give the bakery a call at (808) 531-1651. They’ll ask you the message you want on the cake, the flavor of the cake, the frosting flavor, as well as icing color and any other decoration you might want.

Pay with a credit card over the phone and all you have to do is go to their location in Kalihi and pick it up at whatever date! No need to pull a number — just walk up to the counter and say you’re picking up. You’ll be in and out and on your way to your party in no time!

So if you’re ever in need of a place for a personalized cake for any occasion, I highly recommend this classic Oahu spot. Even if you’re not ordering a cake, stop by, because there’s always a reason to have coco puffs in the house or in the office.
