Travel: The original Kona Brewing Co.

Belly up to the bar!

Belly up to the bar!

Recap: In case you didn’t know, Jake and I spent the in weekend in Kona for our friend’s wedding!

I mostly hung around with the gang who wasn’t in the wedding party, and during some of our downtime we got to eat lunch at the original Kona Brewing Co. — in Kona!

This was a huge deal for me. If you’ll recall, I named the Kona Brewing Co. in Hawaii Kai on Oahu as one of my Top 3 Summer Picks in 2013. So basically I’ve been dying to get to what I’ve dubbed “the motherland.”

Inside you’ll find the bar and the same great local beers, along with some specials up on a chalkboard.

Unlike the Hawaii Kai location, the original is located in a more industrial area. There’s both inside and outside seating, and we quickly decided that we wanted to sit inside because it was so humid that weekend.

But the biggest difference? Besides the Brewery Tour that’s available, there’s this thing called the Growler Shack outside.

If you don’t know what a Growler is, you’re not alone. Jake jokingly asked me to buy him one — and I found that they are 1/2 gallon glass jugs — so you can take their famous beers home with you ($22)! Plus if you’re a local, bring your empty Growler by during Growler Hour for refills at $13.50 or get a new one for 20 percent off!

If you don’t want to lug it around, you can always buy an empty jug as a souvenir (also $13.50).

So the next time you’re in Kona, go get yourself a Growler!
